The perfect base: Dessau-Rosslau

With a population of 85,000, the city – as the third main regional hub in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt – sits at the heart of the “Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm” and is famous for its Bauhaus architecture. In terms of infrastructure, it offers all the facilities of a modern city – from childcare places to the renowned Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, a four-stage theatre, cinemas, museums and a variety of restaurants and cafés. The Anhalt state “Welcome Center” supports those moving or returning to the region in finding suitable housing, provides information on childcare facilities and schools, helps newcomers liaise with public authorities, and offers language courses (see Welcome to Dessau-Rosslau – and welcome to IDT Biologika.

A host of things to discover

Uniquely in the whole of Europe, the region is home to a total of four UNESCO heritage sites situated in close proximity to one another. The famous Bauhaus, which was designed in 1925-26 as the University of Design by Walter Gropius, the picturesque Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm with its seven castles and parkland areas, and the Martin Luther memorial sites located only 35 km away are all found within the UNESCO Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. Technology fans can marvel at a real-life JU 52 in the Hugo Junkers Technology Museum, while music and theatre aficionados will need little encouragement to visit the Anhalt State Theatre and the annual Kurt Weill festival.

The natural landscape around Dessau-Rosslau also has plenty to offer. Features include lakes and local recreation areas that can be explored by boat, on foot or by bicycle. In Ferropolis, the “City of Iron”, disused coal excavators form an unusual backdrop for concerts featuring international stars and festivals such as Melt! or Splash. If you fancy a taste of big city life, Halle (Saale), Leipzig and Berlin are only a short hop away and are easily accessible by car via the A9 motorway or by train.

Whether you’re looking for a one-room student apartment or a detached house in a green setting, the Dessau-Rosslau housing market has the right home for everyone – and what’s more, at relatively low prices. The city centre offers an appealing variety of older and newer flats in multi-occupancy apartment blocks, while the neighbouring Dessau-Nord residential district contains a large number of individual apartments in attractive Wilhelmian-style buildings. If you have more particular requirements, the neighbourhood of Ziebigk to the west offers detached houses, open spaces where you can build your new home and lovely apartments – all in close proximity to the River Elbe and the UNESCO world heritage sites. And wherever your new home is located, excellent public transport options – and well constructed cycle paths – will bring you smoothly from A to B.
If you decide to move to Dessau-Rosslau, it’s worth seeking advice in advance from the Saxony-Anhalt “Welcome Center”. There you can apply for an interest-free support loan of up to €25,000, funded by the Saxon-Anhalt investment bank. You can find out more by visiting:

Little ones, too, are very well looked after. Dessau-Rosslau offers 13 state childcare centres and 13 privately owned ones. And as a new colleague at IDT, you can also claim a grant to subsidise your childcare costs. Addresses of childcare providers can be found here:

When you want to let off steam with your family, then – depending on the weather – you can head outdoors to countless green spaces, parks, play areas and adventure playgrounds or visit one of two indoor play facilities. Alternatively, you could pay a visit to the animals sponsored by IDT Biologika in the Dessau Animal Park, which in 2011 was voted “Zoo of the Year”. In addition, in one of the city’s 120 sporting and gymnastics clubs, you have the chance to stay active and enjoy your leisure time with like-minded people.
Even when they’ve finished high school, your children can benefit from outstanding opportunities. Why not take a look at the online apprenticeship portal offered by the chambers of commerce and industry. Those wanting to develop their career skills can apply for a grant from the Saxony-Anhalt investment bank. Find out more information at:

Whether you’re interested in architecture, history, art or beautiful gardens – when it comes to culture and free-time activities, you’ll be very much at home. From Bauhaus architecture to castles and historic estates to fascinating galleries and exhibitions, Dessau-Rosslau offers a whole host of things to admire. Alternatively, you can trace the history of the Reformation in nearby Wittenberg by visiting sites associated with the church reformers Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon or the artist Lucas Cranach. In addition, seven multi-region cycle trails, including Germany’s most popular, the Elbe Cycle Route, criss-cross the region, giving you a great opportunity to get to know the people and countryside of the area

Culture vultures will also feel right at home.
